Before the 2020-2021 academic year can begin within Fremont Community Schools, a formal "cap" must be put on the 2019-2020 year which was one that was unlike any before. During the Fremont Community Schools Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, a motion was made and passed by the board to shift this Saturday's, Graduation Ceremony to the football field to where social distancing protocols can be better executed. The ceremony will still begin at 10 A.M.
With attention turning to a new year, many challenges that ended the 2019-2020 calendar are still in the forefront, as the COVID-19 restrictions still in place are putting a hamper on returning in full force to traditional in classroom learning as normal.
Fremont Superintendent, Dr. Bill Stitt did specify to both the board and those who were in attendance that precautions are being put in place, however as sanitation and cleaning supplies are on their way they still have not arrived in full. Supplies should arrive in full force before school begins in a few weeks.
Parents will have the option of having their child enrolled in the classroom, or through a virtual (e-learning) platform with further details of such procedures being discussed with teachers district wide on July 30th.
In addition to district wide measures, the high school, middle school, and elementary school are putting in their own measures to keep students safe upon their return to school. For the elementary school, student drop off and pick up locations for buses and parental drop off are being adjusted to help keep the flow of traffic smooth and not congested in any sector of the building. For the middle school, similar unload and pick up location changes are in the works as well. As far as the high school goes, provisions are being looked at to where in person classes will be archived in a video/audio format to where students may be able to still access the in class lessons virtually if need be.
Before adjourning the meeting Stitt simply stated, "The goal is always to get better, not worse."
Fremont Community Schools are set to resume classes and begin a new academic year on Wednesday, August 12th.
