ELKHART COUNTY – Two people are in custody after leading Indiana State Police on a chase.
Authorities say at 4 PM on December 31, a trooper attempted to stop a 2012 white Toyota Camry for a traffic violation near the intersection of North Rosenberger Street and West Centennial Street in Nappanee. When the trooper turned on his emergency lights, the Toyota refused to stop and drove north on State Road 19.
The suspect sideswiped a Jeep in the roundabout at the intersection of State Road 19nand State Road 119, and then continued north. It's alleged that contraband was thrown from the Toyota in multiple locations. Troopers later were able to locate some of the items and identified them as suspected methamphetamine.
Other deputies put down stop sticks at the intersection of County Road 26 and County Road 19. The Toyota hit them and kept going north. At the intersection of County Road 19 and County Road 24 it ran a red light and collided with a Suzuki Reno that was heading west. The Toyota came to a stop and the driver and passenger were not injured and taken into custody. A search of the vehicle uncovered 80 grams of suspected meth, a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen, and suspected marijuana.
The driver of the Toyota, 26-year-old Luiz Fraire of Bristol, was arrested on charges of dealing meth, possession of meth, possession of a handgun by a violent felon, possession of the stolen property, obstruction of justice, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of a hand gun without a license. A passenger in the car, 27-year-old Fernanda Perez, was arrested on an active warrant. Both were taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
Assisting troopers were the Wakarusa and Elkhart Police Departments and the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office.
