Alcohol Believed to be a Factor by Authorities in Weekend Crash

AUBURN, IN - Authorities are continuing to investigate a weekend crash where two people are now in critical condition.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, a vehicle driven by Nathaniel Wopshall, age 21 of Fremont was driving a 2018 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed in the northbound lanes of I-69 near mile marker 324 in Dekalb County, close to Auburn. Reports indicate he rear-ended a vehicle driven by Kimberly Waltz, age 51 of Angola.

Investigators say the impact caused Waltz to roll her vehicle, which came to rest on the entrance ramp to I-69 from the rest area.

Both drivers were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Sanford Waltz, age 52, was a passenger in Kimberly Waltz’s vehicle at the time of the crash. He is listed in stable condition.

Authorities say the crash is still under investigation and that at this time, alcohol is believed to a factor.

An Indiana State Police reconstructionist was requested to the scene by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.
