Theron Hunt To Remain In Prison
By: Mike Stiles - Wednesday, August 25, 2021

UNDATED – The Michigan Court of Appeals says Theron Hunt will not have a chance for parole and will stay in prison.

The Court of Appeals overturned Hunt's appeal to be released, after being convicted by a St. Joseph County Circuit Court jury in January 2020 of first degree felony murder, two charges of armed robbery, along with a charge of unlawful imprisonment, second degree criminal sexual conduct and felony firearms.

Hunt along with 24 year old Kayla Cheney and 20 year old Tyler McNeil were all arrested following an incident November 15, 2018. Kevin Johnson, a truck driver from Kentucky, was shot and killed at a residence on South Street in Flowerfield Township. The trio also faced charges for robbing Dainelle King on that same date. Investigators say they were told that Johnson tried to steal a vehicle which led to his being shot. Authorities later discovered that Hunt, Cheney and McNeil were going to sell fake drugs to Johnson, but the plan went wrong and Johnson was shot by Cheney.

The appeal submitted to the Court of Appeals claimed that there was no proof that Hunt acted with malice in this incident. However, the Court of Appeals found nothing to substantiate that claim. One of Hunt's co-defendants, Kayla Cheney, was sentenced to 25 to 75 years in prison on a second degree murder charge. His other co-defendant, Tyler McNeil, is serving 12 to 60 years in prison for a charge of armed robbery as a repeat offender.
