Northeastern Center Introduces Support Group For Mental Illness
By: Mike Stiles - Monday, July 25, 2022

A new resource is available for those who live with mental illness.

The Northeastern Center has started it NAMI Peer Led Support Group. It began July 11 and is a voluntary group, and is being offered the second Monday of every month from 3:20 PM until 5 PM. The meetings are held in the Northeastern Center’s New Hope Clubhouse, 304 South Lincoln Street in Kendallville. There is no cost or registration needed to attend the group, and you do not have to be a current client of the Northeastern Center.

NAMI stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. According to the website, “NAMI advocates for access to services, treatment, supports and research and is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all those in need. NAMI’s support groups give an opportunity to be heard and to be helped.”

The group facilitators have been trained based on 12 Principles of Support. The Principles of Support represents what the group is striving for as they come to terms with mental illness. The principles aim to see the individual first, not the illness and recognize that mental illnesses are medical illness that may have environmental triggers. Group participants find strength in sharing experiences and expect a better future in a realistic way.

Northeastern Center, Inc. has been serving the people of LaGrange, Noble, Steuben and DeKalb Counties for over 45 years. The agency’s mission is to help individuals achieve emotional and mental wholeness through accessible, affordable, and quality behavioral health services.
