PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A brain-eating amoeba is threating the life of 13-year-old Caleb Ziegelbauer after swimming in Florida beach.
Ziegelbauer went swimming with is family on July 1 at the Port Charlotte Beach Park in Port Charlotte, Florida.
According to family members five days later he was struck down by a severe fever. He then became disoriented and started hallucinating before they took him to the hospital where he was initially diagnosed with meningitis.
His doctors theorized the brain-eating amoeba swam up Caleb’s nose and infected his brain.
According to experts, 97 percent of people never recover from these types of contaminations.
The teen is currently hospitalized in Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida in Tampa with his family and friends surrounding him praying for his recovery.
