INDIANAPOLIS – Monkeypox cases in Indiana are steadily on the rise after the state’s first confirmed case in late June.

The CDC reports 37 total confirmed cases of monkeypox in Indiana and 4,639 cases in the U.S. as of July 27.

St. Joseph County, Indiana announced their first confirmed case on Wednesday, and Marion County, Indiana has the most confirmed cases of monkeypox in the state, with a total 17 confirmed cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a public health emergency on July 23 amid global efforts to contain the outbreak.

According to the CDC, the most common symptom is a rash resembling blisters or acne. They appear in the mouth or on other parts on the outside of the body. Other symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches and fatigue.

Those infected should be isolated. Monkeypox normally lasts between two and four weeks, but is noted as infectious from the time symptoms start until the rash is fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed.
