ANGOLA – A taskforce agreement for the Poka-Bache Connector Trail is underway in Northeast Indiana.

On Monday Jennifer Sharkey the Lead Research Engineer Local Technical Assistance Program with Purdue University presented to the Steuben County Board of Commissioners and the Angola Common Council in two separate meetings in order to join local agencies together forming the Interlocal Agreement.

The Interlocal Agreement will join Steuben, Dekalb, Allen, and Wells counties together to compete and govern the Poka-Bache Connector Trail.

The Poka-Bache Connector Trail is an 81-mile trail connecting Steuben County down though Wells County. The trail will run through four counties and seven cities and connect Pokagon State Park in Angola to the Oubache State Park in Bluffton.

“The trail will connect over 121,000 people, 140 recreational areas, 10 Libraries and 50 schools within 1 mile of the trail,” states the Northeastern Indiana Regional Coordinating Council (NIRCC) website.

Dekalb County Commissioners have approved the Interlocal Agreement and Allen County Commissioners have had, "favorable conversations," regarding the Interlocal Agreement said Sharkey.

The Steuben County Commissioners requested more time to review the process, but the Angola Common Council approved the Interlocal Agreement.

“We seek trails as a way of not only attracting youth and attracting talent, keeping them within our region, but also to keep our seniors here...” said NIRCC Executive Director Dan Avery.

The formation of the Interlocal Agreement should be finalized by the end of October 2022 after all counties and cities involved have had sufficient time to respond.
