CENTREVILLE, MI – The investigation into two homicides that happened in Sturgis over the weekend continues.
Monday afternoon, Sturgis Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak and St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman held a press conference at the St. Joseph County Training Center in Centreville.
Banaszak says his department was contacted at 10:43 PM about a woman that had possibly been shot and struck by a vehicle on South Centreville Road and South Street. Officers arrived and found 38 year old Stacy Mae Ramsey of Sturgis. She was being transported by the Sturgis Ambulance Company to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, but died on the way.
Thanks to witness information, a suspect was identified as 30 year old David Keith Algarin Jr. of Sturgis. Banaszak says officers were able to locate him a short time later.
Bingaman says his department was collecting evidence at the Park when they received an update on Algarin at 11:10 AM Sunday, driving east through Sturgis. Deputies took over the pursuit which went into the City of Bronson, then north on South Matteson Lake Road and then west on M-86.
Bingaman says it was decided to try to stop the pursuit as quickly as possible to ensure the safety off the suspect, the officers and the community.
The officer involved shooting is being investigated by the Michigan State Police. The double homicides are still under investigation. More information will be released as it become available.
