Friday, April 16, 2021

ANGOLA, IN - The Trine University men's soccer team recorded its third straight win by shutout with a 3-0 blanking of Alma College in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and regular-season home finale at Weaver Field.

The Thunder out-shot the Scots, 23-2, and held Alma without a shot in the second half. The two teams played to a scoreless tie until the 36:36 minute mark of the first half when Trine's (9-4, 4-3 MIAA) Colin Nicoski broke the stalemate on a shot that hit the far post and Nicoski put the ball past the Alma (0-6, 0-5 MIAA) netminder on the rebound. Freshmen Tyler Murphy and Alhasan Yahya were credited with assists on the goal.

Shortly after the Nicoski goal, Trine struck again when Alhasan Yahya added to his earlier point on the afternoon with a goal of his own during the 40th minute with a helper from fellow freshman Joey Donovan to make it a 2-0 game at the half in favor of the Thunder.

Trine held on to its two-goal advantage until the 70:34 mark when the Thunder tacked on another score for good measure, this time by junior Brandon Murphy that increased the lead to 3-0. The goal by Brandon Murphy turned out to be the final goal by either team the rest of the way as the Thunder went on to win by the final of 3-0.

Freshman Troy Saylor played the first half in net for Trine and gave up no goals and had one save in the win. Sophomore Luis Rodriguez finished the game and allowed no goals and had no saves in 45 minutes of playing time.

The men's soccer team will look towards the MIAA Tournament that begins next Tuesday, Apr. 20. Start time and opponent are still to be determined.
