ELKHART COUNTY – Eight people, including four children, were injured in a three vehicle collision in Northern Indiana.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office says 44 year old Samantha Winslow of Nappanee was driving north on County Road 15, north of the intersection of State Road 119 just after 12 PM Sunday. She was passing a slow moving, animal drawn buggy. While passing the buggy, Winslow's automobile collided head on with a southbound vehicle, driven by 16 year old Keller Dittman of Wakarusa, who was traveling at excessive speeds.
Dittman's vehicle drove off the west side of the road and overturned. The collision between the two automobiles forced Winslow's vehicle into the buggy, and pushed it off the east side of the road where it overturned. Dittman was unconscious and flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital by Med Flight. Winslow complained of chest and foot pain, and was taken to Goshen General Hospital. Her two passengers, 13 year old Gwen Winslow and 18 year old Taylor Winslow, were also taken to Goshen General Hospital. Gwen had head and stomach pain while Taylor had minor cuts to the face.
The driver of the buggy, 28 year old Leander Martin of Goshen, had a head injury and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital. His passengers, 26 year old Emma Martin and 5 year old Conrad Martin suffered cuts to their wrist and head. Three year old Nathaniel Martin had a facial injury. They were also taken to Elkhart General Hospital. Samantha Winslow was given a citation for unsafe passing and child restraint violations, as neither Gwen or Taylor Winslow were wearing their safety belts. Dittman was cited for excessive speed and a seatbelt violation.
