Steuben County Sheriff's Office Issues Reminder About Tax Scams
By: Sheila McCrea - Saturday, January 8, 2022

ANGOLA, IN - With tax season upon us again, The Steuben County Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens to be aware of telephone scams involving claims that the IRS is calling or texting about a tax issue.

The IRS does not contact tax payers by telephone for the purpose of collecting any income taxes. The IRS does not ask for or verify any personal or banking information by telephone. The IRS also does not process tax payments through gift cards.

Any unsolicited caller asking someone to put money on a gift card and then send the PIN code on the back of the card to settle any alleged monetary obligation IS A SCAM.
