(FREMONT) - Fremont officials took another step Tuesday toward a proposed $14 million water system improvement project.

During a public hearing, Casey Erwin of DLZ Engineering outlined plans to expand and modernize the town's aging water treatment plant, replace an aging water main along East Toledo Street and make other system improvements. Erwin said much of the equipment currently serving the water utility is between 30 and 50 years old.

The proposed project carries an estimated cost of just under $14 million, including construction, engineering, administration and financing costs. The largest portion of the project would be a nearly $10 million expansion and modernization of the water treatment plant.

Town officials said the project is intended to address aging infrastructure while preparing the system for future growth.

Following the public hearing, Town Council members approved moving forward with legal work needed for the State Revolving Fund financing process. Fremont applied for funding through the program earlier this year and expects to learn this summer whether the project qualifies for assistance.

If funding is secured, construction would likely begin next year, with project completion expected in 2028.
