EAST LANSING – Three more winter sports will be allowed to restart practices as of Saturday.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday that according to the epidemic order that was updated by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, girls gymnastics, girls and boys bowling and girls and boy swimming and diving, which are non contact sports, can start practicing on Saturday. They can also begin competition before the end of January. Swimming and
diving can start competitions as of January 22 while gymnastics and bowling on January 25.
Masks will be required of all participants except when they are actively participating in gymnastics and swimming and diving. Spectators will be limited to 100 persons in school gyms and 250 in stadiums and arenas.
The MHSAA says basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling, which are considered contact sports, may begin non contact practices January 16. First competitions are scheduled to start February 1. Because of the later start to competition in those sports, the MHSAA will adjust its tournament dates for those four to conclude on dates later than what is currently scheduled. Those dates will be announced later this week.
