(ST. JOE) – No injuries were reported in a crash between a truck and a train.
According to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office., deputies were called to the railroad crossing on Washington Street at Railroad Street in St. Joe at 7:30 AM Monday for a report of a crash. When they arrived deputies found a white pickup with heavy damage still sitting partially on the north track with the crossing arm down across the hood of the vehicle. A stopped train was on the south track blocking the crossing.
The driver of the pick up, 75 year old Calvin Yoder of St. Joe, told deputies he was driving south on Washington Street and was crossing the railroad tracks. He said he knows that Railroad Street is a side street and thought he was turning on to it, but started his turn too early and became stuck on the south tracks.
Yoder says he tried to free his vehicle, but couldn’t and he got out of the truck. Yoder says he was looking for the number of the railroad when he heard the eastbound train approaching. The train was not able to stop and struck his pickup, pushing it onto the crossing to the north.
The pickup was totaled. The train was not damaged and the locomotive’s conductor and engineer were not injured in the incident.
