(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosiers looking to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through service are invited to volunteer at properties managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

DNR officials say several state properties will offer self-directed volunteer opportunities that day, including activities such as litter pickup along trails. A full list of MLK Day service projects, along with other volunteer opportunities throughout the year, can be found at calendar.dnr.IN.gov.

Beyond the holiday, the DNR relies on volunteers year-round to help maintain trails, improve wildlife habitat, assist in nature centers, and contribute skills such as photography or art. Many projects can be tailored to match a volunteer's interests or experience.

"Volunteering gives you a great sense of accomplishment," said Jody Heaston, volunteer coordinator for Indiana State Parks. "You are helping manage and conserve our natural and cultural resources for future generations to enjoy."

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact their nearest DNR property directly or explore opportunities online at on.IN.gov/dnrvolunteer. Additional information is also available by emailing DNRvolunteer@dnr.IN.gov.
