(AUBURN) - A DeKalb County judge has sentenced a Fort Wayne man to 54 years in prison for firing a handgun at another driver during a 2022 pursuit.

Joseph Alan Fisher, 42, received a 40-year sentence for attempted murder, enhanced by 14 years after a jury found him to be a habitual offender. He was also convicted of residential entry and possession of methamphetamine. The lesser sentences will run concurrently.

Prosecutors said Fisher followed another man after a confrontation involving Fisher's former girlfriend and fired multiple shots while both vehicles were moving. They argued the attack was deliberate and could have killed the victim.

At sentencing, the defense cited Fisher's long history of substance abuse, but the judge pointed to Fisher's criminal record and escalating violence, finding no mitigating factors to reduce the sentence.

Fisher received credit for nearly three years already served while awaiting trial.
