(Elkhart County) -A stretch of the Indiana Toll Road in Elkhart County was shut down Wednesday afternoon after a chain-reaction crash involving about 30 vehicles during heavy snowfall.
Indiana State Police say the pileup began just before 4 p.m. near the 94-mile marker, about two miles east of Elkhart, when an initial three-vehicle crash triggered multiple secondary collisions. Semis and passenger vehicles blocked eastbound lanes and the center median, with at least one vehicle crossing into the westbound lanes and ending up in a ditch.
One semi driver was trapped for several hours before crews freed them and took them to a hospital. Several others were injured, though authorities say none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Snow and poor visibility were reported at the time of the crash. While crews cleared debris, eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 83 in Mishawaka and westbound traffic rerouted at Exit 96 near County Road 17.
The crash remains under investigation.
