(GARY) - The City of Gary has formally entered the race to become the new home of the Chicago Bears, unveiling a detailed stadium proposal as the team expands its search into northwest Indiana.

City leaders say the introduction of proposed state legislation to create a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority would strengthen Indiana's bid by helping finance a potential stadium project.

Gary's proposal outlines three "plug-and-play" stadium sites: the Gary West End Entertainment District near Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, Buffington Harbor, and Miller Beach.

Mayor Eddie Melton said Gary's proximity to Chicago, existing transportation infrastructure and Lake Michigan waterfront views make the city a strong contender.

Melton confirmed the city has had conversations with Bears leadership and said the project could drive long-term economic growth across northwest Indiana.
