(COLUMBUS) - Ohio drivers are spending less time on their phones behind the wheel than drivers nationwide, according to a new study from Cambridge Mobile Telematics.

The statewide analysis found Ohio motorists averaged 21.9 phone taps per 100 miles from January through December 2025. That compares to a national average of 23.6 taps, placing Ohio about 7% below the U.S. average.

Ohio drivers also spent slightly less time on handheld phone calls. Nationwide, drivers used handheld phones for about 0.82% of their driving time, compared to 0.78% in Ohio.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said the findings show progress but emphasized the need for continued caution. Ohio law, signed in 2023, bans most drivers from holding or using electronic devices while driving, though handheld phone calls are still allowed.

Preliminary data shows Ohio traffic deaths dropped 3% in 2025 compared to 2024, marking the fourth straight year of decline. Officials say reduced distracted driving is believed to be a contributing factor.
