(LAKE COUNTY) - An Indiana State Police trooper is recovering after being seriously injured during a pursuit early Monday morning in Lake County.

According to authorities, the incident began around 3:30 a.m. when the Lake County Sheriff's Department initiated a pursuit on Interstate 80 near Kennedy Avenue for a reported traffic violation. An Indiana State Police trooper joined the chase near Cline Avenue and Ridge Road.

Police said the trooper successfully performed a Precision Immobilization Technique, or PIT maneuver, to stop the suspect vehicle. After exiting his patrol car and approaching the stopped vehicle, he was struck by another police vehicle.

The trooper was transported to a hospital with serious injuries and has since been released. Officials said he is expected to face a lengthy recovery.

"We are thankful that Trooper Haddon is expected to make a full recovery," said Lt. Weems, commander of the Lowell Post.

The pursuit and resulting crash remain under investigation. Authorities said they are reviewing the circumstances surrounding how the trooper was struck and have not released additional details about the suspect or driver involved.
