(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Bayer is proposing a $7.25 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging its Roundup weedkiller caused cancer.

The agreement would create a long-term compensation program for people diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using the product.

Payments could be spread over several years and would vary based on exposure and medical factors.

The company faces tens of thousands of pending claims in U.S. courts and has set aside nearly $12 billion for litigation costs. The proposed settlement still requires court approval and sufficient participation from plaintiffs.
