(LANSING) - A proposal to build a statewide high-speed rail network is becoming a major topic in Michigan's gubernatorial race ahead of the primary election.

Democratic candidate Jocelyn Benson is promoting a plan to connect major cities with fast passenger rail, including potential routes from Detroit to Grand Rapids and from Ann Arbor to Traverse City. Benson says the system could boost economic development, improve commuting options and strengthen tourism without necessarily requiring tax increases.

Funding details have not been finalized. Benson has pointed to public-private partnerships and regional cooperation as possible sources, though analysts say true high-speed rail systems typically cost billions of dollars to build. Michigan's existing rail lines are largely controlled by freight companies, which could limit passenger speeds and scheduling flexibility.

Supporters argue expanded rail service could attract younger workers, link regional economies and help address population stagnation by making it easier to live in one community and work in another.

Republican leaders and other critics question whether the investment would deliver sufficient returns, citing high costs and challenges faced by large rail projects in other states.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is already studying several potential passenger rail corridors, including a Detroit-Lansing-Grand Rapids route and a north-south line to Traverse City.

Benson is seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed the current administration and would face the eventual Republican nominee in the general election.
