(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced a new initiative aimed at improving safety for highway workers in construction zones.
The program, called Project Greenlight, equips crews with wearable devices that emit flashing green lights, making workers more visible to motorists from all directions.
INDOT officials say the bright green color is highly visible to the human eye and stands out from traditional work zone lighting. When paired with high-visibility vests, the lights can make workers up to 89 percent more visible to drivers, according to studies cited by the agency.
Transportation leaders say drivers are more likely to slow down and move over when they see the distinctive green lights.
The devices were tested beginning in fall 2025 with Hoosier Helper patrols and maintenance crews in northwest Indiana, the Indianapolis area, and southeast Indiana. About 375 lights will now be distributed statewide, starting with the Northwest District.
Workers are encouraged to use the lights during nighttime operations and in low-visibility conditions such as fog, rain, or snow. Officials say the goal is to reduce crashes and injuries while crews perform road work across the state.
