(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana lawmakers have approved -- and Gov. Mike Braun has signed -- legislation creating a framework to pursue a new Chicago Bears stadium in northwest Indiana.

Senate Bill 27 establishes the Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority and related governing bodies to acquire land, finance development and oversee construction of a potential NFL facility near the Wolf Lake area in Hammond.

Supporters say the measure lays the groundwork for a public-private partnership that could bring the Bears across the state line from Chicago. Team officials have expressed interest in building an enclosed stadium and called the law a critical step forward while site evaluations continue.

Lawmakers previously indicated the team could contribute about $2 billion toward construction, with Indiana potentially investing roughly $1 billion in infrastructure. Funding tools discussed include new local food, beverage, admissions and innkeeper taxes tied to the project.

Braun has argued Indiana's business climate positions the state to compete for major developments like the stadium.

The Bears said they will continue due diligence as they consider whether to move forward with a Hammond location.
