(BLUFFTON) - A former Wells County coroner and Bluffton police officer has been sentenced following investigations into domestic battery and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Clifford Thomas, 49, was sentenced to about eight months in the Wells County Jail, according to a sentencing order released Wednesday.

Thomas previously served as both Wells County coroner and a police officer in Bluffton. He resigned as coroner and was dismissed from the police department after the investigations became public in November.

Authorities charged Thomas with felony counts of strangulation and pointing a firearm, along with misdemeanor domestic battery charges related to abuse involving a woman he lived with.

He was initially released on bond in November but was later arrested again on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and invasion of privacy.

Court records show Thomas pleaded guilty in December to the charges connected to the investigations.

After completing his jail sentence, Thomas will serve two and a half years of probation.

Just days before sentencing, Thomas was also charged with three misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy for allegedly violating a protective order connected to the domestic battery case.

Those charges are still pending and could lead to additional jail time.
