(DEKALB COUNTY) - DeKalb Central Schools and DeKalb Eastern Schools are among more than 100 Indiana school districts taking legal action against social media companies.

According to WTHR, the lawsuit claims social media platforms are addictive for young people and contribute to distractions and disruptions in schools.

The litigation is being led by the Missouri-based law firm Wagstaff & Cartmell, LLP, which represents more than 2,000 school districts nationwide.

The lawsuit seeks damages from social media companies and requests jury trials. The firm says the case is not a class-action lawsuit, meaning each school district is filing as its own plaintiff.

According to the law firm, school districts involved in the case assume no financial risk because there will be no cost or reimbursement fee if the lawsuit is unsuccessful.

DeKalb school officials say if their districts receive compensation, the funds would be used to support mental health resources for students.
