(LANSING, MI) - Health officials are working to contain a measles outbreak in southeast Michigan after multiple cases were confirmed in Washtenaw County.

Three cases have been identified so far, all linked to an unvaccinated adult who visited several public locations in Ypsilanti and Canton between March 4 and March 8.

Two additional cases involve unvaccinated children between the ages of 5 and 17.

Officials say people who may have been exposed should monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days, including fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that typically starts on the face.

Residents are urged to contact a healthcare provider before seeking treatment if symptoms develop to help prevent further spread.

Health leaders warn declining vaccination rates are increasing the risk of outbreaks and say additional cases are possible.
