(MIAMI COUNTY) - Indiana State Police are investigating after 50-year-old Shawn L. Booker of Fort Wayne died while incarcerated at the Miami Correctional Facility, the second reported death at the prison in less than a week.
State police say detectives were called on April 4th to investigate Booker's death. Few details have been released, and an autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause. The Miami County Coroner's Office and prison investigators are assisting.
Online court records show Booker had been transferred to the prison after being charged in 2025 with domestic battery and violating probation tied to a 2022 criminal case.
The death follows a second case involving 55-year-old Tuan Van Bui of Vietnam, an ICE detainee who was found unresponsive at the same facility on April 1st. ICE says life-saving efforts were attempted, but he was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m.
Federal officials say Bui entered the United States in 1990 under the Amerasian Homecoming Act, never became a U.S. citizen and had been under a removal order since 2005.
Both deaths remain under active investigation.
