Ohio Law Tightens Rules On Out-Of-State Cannabis Purchases

(COLUMBUS) - A new Ohio law is tightening cannabis possession rules by making marijuana bought outside the state illegal to possess in Ohio unless it was home-grown under state rules.

The changes come under Senate Bill 56, which revises Ohio's adult-use marijuana law and further defines what falls within legal possession.

Under the updated rules, cannabis must either be purchased from a licensed Ohio dispensary or grown through legal home cultivation. Marijuana legally bought in another state, including neighboring Michigan, is now considered illegal once brought into Ohio.

Officials note federal law already bans transporting cannabis across state lines, but the new Ohio law adds state-level possession restrictions and broader enforcement clarity.

The measure is part of a larger rewrite of Ohio's marijuana and hemp regulations as the state continues building out its adult-use cannabis market.
