(ANGOLA) - Pokagon State Park is recognizing National Volunteer Appreciation Week by highlighting opportunities for residents to get involved.

Park officials say volunteers play a key role in supporting operations, from maintaining trails and buildings to assisting at the nature center and helping with grounds work.

Those interested can join the Friends of Pokagon group, which meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Pokagon Nature Center.

Additional volunteer opportunities include trail maintenance, mowing, trimming and other projects around the park. Officials say anyone interested can contact the nature center at 260-833-3506 or visit the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website for more information.

Park staff say volunteer support is an important part of preserving and maintaining the park's natural resources.
