(FORT WAYNE) - Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration are teaming up for the nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25.

The initiative allows residents to safely dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription medications. Officials say the program is aimed at preventing drug abuse and theft by removing medications from homes.

Collection sites will be set up across the country, including at Indiana State Police posts. The service is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.

The program accepts pills and liquid medications. Needles or sharps will not be accepted.

At the Fort Wayne Post, the collection site will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5811 Ellison Road, near Jefferson Boulevard. Items should be brought inside the front doors of the two-story building and placed in designated boxes.

Officials say unused medications left in homes can be vulnerable to misuse or abuse, and that common disposal methods like flushing or throwing them away can pose safety and environmental risks.

Residents are asked to ensure no needles or sharps are included when dropping off materials.
