(BLOOMINGTON) – Nine people were injured after gunfire broke out during Little 500 celebrations early Sunday in Bloomington.

Bloomington Police say officers were monitoring a large crowd in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue around 12:30 a.m. when multiple shots were fired, sending people running.

Police say officers located multiple injured individuals. As of early Sunday morning, nine people had been taken to hospitals with injuries believed to be connected to the shooting.

Authorities say five victims were transported by ambulance from the scene. Others arrived at hospitals by police vehicle, from a nearby gas station, or in private vehicles.

It remains unclear how many victims suffered gunshot wounds versus injuries from bullet fragments or the chaos that followed.

No suspects are in custody.

Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson said the violence has no place in the city and expressed concern for those injured.

Indiana University officials say no IU students are believed to be involved. In a statement, the university said the incident disrupted what is typically a celebratory weekend and thanked responding agencies.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone with information or video to contact Detective Chris Scott at Bloomington Police.
