(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana University has officially opened a new academic and research center in Washington, D.C.

The Indiana Capital Chronicle reports the university's new Capital Campus will serve as a hub for academic programs, research activities, classrooms and student housing in the nation's capital.

The eight-story building is located on Massachusetts Avenue's Embassy Row and is intended to expand opportunities for students studying public affairs, international affairs, political science and related fields. IU officials said the university has operated programs in Washington for more than 40 years, but the new facility centralizes those efforts in one location.

The Indiana University Foundation purchased the building from Johns Hopkins University in 2025 for $17.5 million.

University officials said the Capital Campus will provide students with access to internships, coursework, networking opportunities and immersive learning experiences while also increasing the visibility of IU research and scholarship in Washington.

The facility includes housing for up to 40 students, with single and double rooms, common areas, kitchenettes, workspaces and access to a fitness center.

IU President Pamela Whitten said the campus will bring students closer to institutions and policy discussions that shape national and global issues while providing real-world experience.
