(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana State Police troopers conducted nearly 35,000 traffic stops across the state in May as part of ongoing traffic enforcement efforts aimed at improving roadway safety.

The Indiana State Police Enforcement Bureau reported troopers made 34,986 traffic stops during the month. Those stops resulted in 16,022 traffic citations and 28,107 traffic warnings.

Troopers also made 361 drunk driving arrests, 1,685 traffic-related criminal arrests and 1,066 non-traffic-related criminal arrests. In addition, troopers issued 1,569 seatbelt citations and 306 distracted driving citations.

State Police investigated 1,507 crashes during May, including 220 personal injury crashes and eight fatal crashes.

Troopers also assisted 2,489 motorists with disabled vehicles. Those incidents included flat tires, mechanical problems, vehicles that became stuck and motorists who ran out of fuel.

Indiana State Police said enforcement efforts may include aviation assets, dedicated patrols, wolf pack patrols, motorcycle patrols, unmarked patrol vehicles and marked Ford Mustangs.

Officials said the goal is to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities on Indiana roadways through voluntary compliance with traffic laws.
