(LANSING) - Michigan school officials are warning of potential staffing and program impacts as state lawmakers remain divided over the next state budget.

The concern comes as the July 1 deadline for school districts to adopt budgets approaches.

The Bridge Michigan reports House Speaker Matt Hall has suggested the possibility of a temporary four-month funding extension if negotiations with Senate Democrats stall. Hall says Republicans want movement on issues including property tax relief and education policy changes before advancing a final budget.

Senate Democrats say they remain committed to meeting the July 1 deadline and continue working toward a budget agreement.

Education leaders warn that prolonged uncertainty could force districts to delay hiring decisions, leave positions unfilled or postpone programs while awaiting final state funding numbers.

Michigan school districts are required to finalize their budgets by July 1, even though the state's fiscal year does not begin until October 1.

Lawmakers are expected to continue negotiations in the coming weeks as the deadline nears.
