(ANGOLA) - The Angola Common Council approved plans Monday night for a new entrance to Trine University from U.S. 20.

The memorandum of understanding outlines a plan for Trine to construct a new two-lane roadway connecting U.S. 20 to Thunder Drive. University officials say the project is intended to improve traffic flow and increase safety at the current Summit Street entrance.

The proposed roadway would align with Joe Wheeler Road on the north side of U.S. 20 and provide improved access for commercial buses and other large vehicles entering campus.

City officials said INDOT has reviewed the proposal and supports the project.

Under the agreement, Trine will construct the new roadway before the city moves forward with vacating a portion of the existing Summit Street right-of-way.

Nearby property owners would retain access to their properties, and utility easements would remain in place. The existing Summit Street connection to U.S. 20 would eventually be closed to through traffic, although portions of the roadway would remain open for local property access.

University officials told council members Trine will pay for the project and is not seeking financial assistance from the city.
