(HICKSVILLE) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who was fatally shot Saturday near Hicksville.
The Defiance County Sheriff's Office and Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday that the shooting was determined to be accidental after children gained access to an unsecured loaded firearm.
Officials have not said whether the toddler shot himself or if another child was involved.
Deputies and emergency responders were called to a home on Buckskin Road shortly after noon Saturday. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the child was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities said adult family members who were on the property are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
In a joint statement, officials said the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of properly securing firearms and maintaining close attention to firearm safety.
