(COLDWATER) - Multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a human trafficking and sex trafficking sting Tuesday in Branch County.

The Branch County Sheriff's Office worked with the Coldwater Police Department, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police, and the Pokagon Band Tribal Police Department.

During the operation, officers contacted several potential trafficking victims and connected them with services and support through S.A.F.E. Place and the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Investigators also made contact with people seeking to purchase commercial sexual services. A press release says that resulted in appropriate law enforcement action.

The operation focused on identifying and assisting potential victims while also addressing the demand side of commercial sexual exploitation.

Additional details were not released because related investigations are ongoing and charging decisions are pending with the Branch County Prosecutor's Office.

The operation comes after Branch County Commissioners approved interim prosecutor Victor Fitz to pursue a federal grant to hire an attorney focused on fraud, human trafficking and drug trafficking involving non-U.S. citizens.
