(ANGOLA) - Organizers are hoping to "Fill the Furth" as Music Americana celebrates its 50th year July 3 at the T. Furth Center for Performing Arts at Trine University.
The free patriotic program begins at 7:00 p.m., with a veterans tribute shown before the concert at 6:00 p.m.
Karen Shelton with the 101 Lakes Kiwanis of Angola says this year marks 50 years for the program, which was started by the Parks Department and Art Ryan in 1976. The event is now coordinated by the 101 Lakes Kiwanis.
Shelton says Ryan had three guidelines for Music Americana: it would always kick off the Fourth of July on July 3, it would always be free to the public, and it would always feature local talent.
This year's program is billed as a patriotic tribute to the city, county and country, performed by local talent.
The veterans tribute includes 206 pictures of area veterans, along with their branch of service, years served and rank. The tribute loops until the music program begins.
This year's performers include Elise and Savannah, gymnasts from Angola's Got Talent; Chip and Sarah Adams, second-place winners in the adult division; Kirsten Crowell; Erica Lee; Ron Smith; Ted Alshaus; the Pokagon Pitch Pipers; the Shimmer Tones; Note to Self; and Lily, who will perform the national anthem as a solo.
Trail Life boys will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
The program will also include Jerry Mao on piano, a community chorus and a small orchestra. The finale brings everyone back on stage for "Back Home Again in Indiana."
Shelton says there will be special surprises for the 50th anniversary, along with special 250th anniversary flags handed out to everyone who attends. The flags were donated jointly by Republicans and Democrats in Steuben County.
The event is free to the public. Music Americana is coordinated by the 101 Lakes Kiwanis and sponsored by Trine University, Angola Parks Department and the Steuben County Tourism Bureau.
