(ANGOLA) - Adults will get their own chance to swim, bike and run when the YMCA of Steuben County expands its annual Youth Triathlon on Saturday, August 1.

The YMCA is adding its first Adult Super Sprint Triathlon to the event, giving beginners and recreational athletes a shorter introduction to the sport.

"This event has always been about helping young people challenge themselves and discover what they're capable of," Senior Program Director Brice Bolinger said. "By adding the Adult Super Sprint, families can now experience race day together."

Adult Super Sprint

The adult race includes:

  • A 150-yard swim
  • A 5.5-mile bike ride
  • A 1.5-mile run

Check-in begins at 7 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m.

Youth Triathlon

The youth event begins at 9 a.m., with check-in from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

Distances are based on age:

  • Ages 12 and younger: 25-yard swim, one-mile bike ride and half-mile run
  • Ages 13 to 15: 50-yard swim, three-mile bike ride and one-mile run
  • Ages 16 and older in the youth division: 150-yard swim, 5.5-mile bike ride and 1.5-mile run

Participants will swim in the YMCA pool, bike along a community course and finish with a run.

Life jackets and training wheels are welcome for younger competitors.

An optional early check-in and course preview will be offered Friday, July 31, from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Bike and Soul will be available Friday evening and Saturday to inspect bicycles and answer questions.

Registration costs $30 for YMCA members and $40 for non-members.

Spectators may attend free. Registration is available through the YMCA of Steuben County website.
