(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Governor Mike Braun and other Republican leaders reacted sharply after state senators voted down a congressional redistricting plan backed by President Donald Trump. The Indiana Senate rejected the proposal 31-19, blocking a map that would have given Republicans control of all nine of the state's congressional seats. The plan would have split Indianapolis into four districts and eliminated Indiana's two Democratic-held seats.

Governor Braun criticized Republicans who opposed the plan, saying he was "very disappointed" and warning that the decision could carry political consequences. He said the vote rejected both the redistricting effort and President Trump's leadership. Democratic leaders praised the outcome. House Democratic Leader Phil GiaQuinta said the vote showed Hoosiers' voices still matter, adding lawmakers should now focus on rising costs and economic pressures instead of partisan redistricting. The vote came after months of pressure from Trump and national GOP leaders, including Vice President JD Vance, who made multiple visits to Indiana in the months leading up to the vote, urging Republicans to support the map. The defeat marks a rare public break between Indiana Senate Republicans and the Trump Administration.
