LANSING – Michigan has seen an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases over the last few weeks.
That prompted Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Friday to urge Michiganders to take several volunteer measures that would hopefully slow down the latest surge in cases and the number of people being hospitalized. Two of the measures dealt specifically with high schools around the state and dining in at restaurants.
Whitmer says everyone has to step up their game for the next two weeks. She is asking high schools to go remote for two weeks past spring break. Whitmer also called for youth sports to voluntarily suspended games and practices for two weeks. She is also strongly encouraging all Michiganders to avoid dining indoors and to avoid gathering with friends indoors for two weeks.
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun says the recent data is concerning, but there is no reason to panic. She says Michiganders know how to do this. Khaldun reiterated that just because something is open doesn't mean that it's safe or that you should do it.
Whitmer also announced Friday that with this spike in COVID-19 cases, she is renewing her call for the federal government to send additional vaccines to Michigan.
