Man With Knife Threatens to Hurt Himself
Friday, September 17, 2021

PLEASANT LAKE, IN - ThSteuben County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 4800 block of South Old US 27 in Pleasant Lake, Indiana on a report of a male subject who appeared to be armed with a knife.

The initial call came in just after 10 AM Friday morning. Further reports indicated that the male subject was standing alone outside with the knife pressed up against his body possibly contemplating harming himself. When Sheriff's Deputies and other law enforcement personnel arrived, the man began cutting and stabbing himself about the head and upper body. The man was given several loud verbal commands to drop the knife but refused to comply.

Responding officers were then forced to deploy less-lethal munitions in order to disarm the man so he could be safely taken into custody and receive medical treatment of his injures. Upon deploying a combination of a less-lethal bean bag round from a 12 gauge shotgun followed by the probes from a Conductive Energy Weapon commonly known as a "Taser", the man still refused to drop his knife. The less-lethal munitions were able to distract the man long enough to allow responding officers to physically take control of his arms and remove the knife from his hand, ending the self-harming actions.

The man was then transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana by Steuben County EMS for treatment of the self-inflicted stab wounds and lacerations. It was also discovered that the man had been reported as a missing/endangered person out of Kent County, Michigan. No other injuries were reported and no criminal charges are expected to be filed. The man's name will not be released due to medical privacy.

Assisting the Sheriff's Office at the scene were the Hamilton Police and the Indiana State Police.
