LAGRANGE – An Iowa man arrested in connection with the death of a four year old boy has been released from jail.
LaGrange County Prosecutor Travis Glick says 35 year old Dylan Diericx of Eldridge, Iowa was released after being able to post a $250,000 bond. He was being held on a felony count of Neglect Of A Dependent Resulting In Death.
On August 19, the Shipshewana Police Department was called to 345 Van Buren Street, where they found a 4 year old boy, unresponsive and in critical condition. He was flown to Parkview North Hospital in Fort Wayne, and later died. The child was the son of Diericx's girlfriend. Diericx told authorities he had been caring for the boy since August 15, and they had been involved in horse-play over that time. Diericx says on August 19, he and the child were playing in the cab of his semi when he threw the child onto the bunk in the sleeper of the semi, and the boy struck his head on a fixed object. The child began convulsing and then became unconscious.
A statement from Glick says the boy's injuries were non consistent with Diericx's explanation. Hospital staff says the child had serious bodily injuries, including fractures to the clavicle and shoulder blade, bruises and abrasions to both sides of his face and forehead; cuts and blunt force trauma to the back of his head, burns around his mouth and other parts of his body and bruises to his genitals, along with bleeding from his anus.
The matter is still under investigation, and additional charges may be filed. Diericx is set to have another preliminary hearing on November 15. If he's found guilty, Diericx could face between 20 and 40 years in prison.
